Can simple salts influence self-assembly in oil? Multivalent cations as efficient gelators of lecithin organosols.

چکیده
It is known that lecithin, a zwitterionic phospholipid, self-assembles into spherical reverse micelles in organic solvents. We have explored the effects of adding inorganic salts to lecithin organosols. Salts are insoluble in organic solvents, and hence their effects on reverse self-assembly have rarely been studied. Our studies show, however, that salts can indeed be dissolved in organic liquids in the presence of lecithin. More interestingly, salts of multivalent cations like calcium (Ca(2+)), magnesium (Mg(2+)), lanthanum (La(3+)), and cerium (Ce(3+)) greatly increase the viscosity of lecithin organosols and transform the samples into optically transparent organogels. In comparison, monovalent cations or transition-metal cations have negligible effect on reverse self-assembly. On the basis of data from small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), we show that gelation is accompanied by a nanostructural transition from spherical micelles to cylindrical micelles/filaments. The varying abilities of different cations to induce gelation is shown to correlate with their binding tendencies to the phosphocholine headgroups of lecithin. A two-component gelator such as lecithin/Ca(2+) could be attractive for applications due to its negligible cost and nontoxic nature. We demonstrate how such a gelator combination can convert a liquid fuel such as kerosene into a gel without the use of heat or shear. The same gel can also further be ungelled by addition of a few drops of alcohol.

Reverse self-assembly of lipid onions induced by gadolinium and calcium ions
Self-assembly of lipids in water is well-known to result in nanostructures such as vesicles in dilute solution. In contrast, self-assembly in nonpolar organic solvents (oils) is much less established and there are hardly any known routes to forming structures such as reverse vesicles. Here, we build such structures based on our surprising recent discovery that salts can influence self-assembly ...
متن کاملMolecular interactions between lecithin and bile salts/acids in oils and their effects on reverse micellization.
It has been known that the addition of bile salts to lecithin organosols induces the formation of reverse wormlike micelles and that the worms are similar to long polymer chains that entangle each other to form viscoelastic solutions. In this study, we further investigated the effects of different bile salts and bile acids on the growth of lecithin reverse worms in cyclohexane and n-decane. We ...
متن کاملA new reverse wormlike micellar system: mixtures of bile salt and lecithin in organic liquids.
We report a new route for forming reverse wormlike micelles (i.e., long, flexible micellar chains) in nonpolar organic liquids such as cyclohexane and n-decane. This route involves the addition of a bile salt (e.g., sodium deoxycholate) in trace amounts to solutions of the phospholipid lecithin. Previous recipes for reverse wormlike micelles have usually required the addition of water to induce...

A series of bis-dendritic gelators consisting of a benzamide dendron and an alkyl dendron were synthesized to investigate the dendritic effect on self-assembly. The gelators with a first-generation benzamide (benzamide-G1) dendron or a first-generation alkyl (alkyl-G1) dendron formed stable gels in most aromatic solvents, and their self-assembled fibrillar networks were imaged by electron micro...

In the last decade, interest in physical organogels has grown rapidly with the discovery and synthesis of a very large number of diverse molecules, which can gel organic solvents at low concentrations. The gelator molecules immobilise large volumes of liquid following their self-assembly into a variety of aggregates such as rods, tubules, fibres and platelets. The many interesting properties of...
